Yankee Stadium Construction

Yankee Stadium Construction

Yankee Stadium, one of baseball’s most famous ballparks, has been the home to the New York Yankees since April 2009. The famous stadium, located in the New York City borough of The Bronx, is the 2nd most expensive sports stadium ever built with an astonishing initial $1.5 billion construction cost.

Groundbreaking for construction for the stadium that today can hold a total of around 51,000 baseball fans began in August of 2006. Some of the controversy surrounding the erection of the new ballpark included a Boston Red Sox fan construction worker trying to place a “hex” on the Yankees by burying rival memorabilia during construction.

The new stadium was constructed with the old Yankee Stadium in mind, and many of its design elements pay homage to the original. The building’s exterior is made from 11,000 pieces of Indiana limestone with granite and pre-cast concrete. The exterior gates also include the building’s name V-cut and gold-leaf lettered. The ballpark’s roof features a replica of a copper frieze that first lined the original parks upper deck stands. Inside the stadium, photographs displaying the Yankee’s historical moments are plentiful.
